My little issue.

I have had my beautiful grey, Mocha, for 2 years now.  She has been the love of my life.  But now im in a position where I might have to give her away.  Being 22 and in college, im in the process of moving to a new college better suited for my career study in art.

My problem is I wont be able to take Mocha with me.  Both the cost of the move for having a pet, the restrictions at the complex I HAD to settle with, and the time she would be completely alone while I was at work and in class.  She cant be left where Im currently living due to the only other residents wont be able to walk her.

If it comes to be where I have to give her up I do not want her back in a adoption kennel.  Just thinking about it makes me feel like I have let her down.  That I couldnt take care of her.  Im not sure what to do.  I dont know anyone who could give her the home thats she may have to leave. Its tearing me apart thinking I may have to give her up.

Any advice?

Hello... long time since I have seen you online here at GA. I am sorry learn you are stressed. My advice and 2 cents are ...If you can keep her at your new place. Hire a dog sitter to watch her while you out. Or if that is not the case. Find a Foster to place till you can get her back. I wish you all the best of luck with her.

Yeah its been very busy here since the portrait I posted a few months back. A lot of art projects to get completed. And growing up. Dealing with all the college stuff, finding a suitable job, and balancing family issues has kept me busy. Just found a great job today which should net me a fair amount of money that I need to save up for the apartment. If everything goes well I might settle for a dog sitter. Since I got Mocha, I have never left her alone for more than 8 hours at a time consistently. So when I leave for 6 hours or so, I hear constantly that shes been whining and pacing waiting for me to come back.

Hopefully I will be able to train her to cope with my long absences everyday.

I have faith you 7 Mocha will be fine. She will get use to you new routine. I think the dog sitters a great option for you and Mocha. Maybe you can get a family member to help you out if you can not afford a dog sitter right away. As a trial . To see how she is.

Keep me posted.

Yes, do keep us posted. And I agree. Have someone that can look in on her, maybe take her for a couple of walks or to the park to play.

Just a question.  Did you sign a contract with the adoption group that you got Mocha from?  A lot of groups require you to return the hound if you cannot keep her, some do not.  Sending a hound to be re-homed is not a horrible thing.  I hope you can work out a way to keep her but if you cannot, please check in with your group.  Lives and circumstances change.  Its not a failure, its mearly life happens to all of us at some time or another.

Some dogs cope well with being alone by themselves for longer periods of time, while others don't. Hence, that's why some of them need companions. I don't mean for you to be getting in over your head, but perhaps if Mocha had a companion houndie, she wouldn't be whining while you were gone because she would have someone to settle down with. Another thing my DH and I used to do when we both worked was either turn on the TV or stereo. Our dogs seemed to enjoy the background noise. Your adoption group may also have someone that has some time that can look in on your dog or have some services that are available to you that you aren't aware of. It is better to check, than just keep going on in ignorance of not knowing. Give it a try and keep us posted. I don't think any of us want to see you have to give up Mocha.
