Iowa Greyhound Hauler Accident

This morning on an overpass on I-80 near the Quad Cities in Iowa, a dog hauler that was bringing hounds from Nebraska to Dubuque and into Wisconsin overturned. The driver had a heart attack while driving, he is dead, his two grandsons are in the hospital and 4 hounds are dead and some are injured as well as some being loose. 25 were taken to the QC Greyhound group. This is a very sad morning. I read about this on another post and while I was reading it, I starting shaking and crying. I feel so bad for the family (he was from VA) as well as the dead, injured and loose hounds. GG- are you close to that area that perhaps your family could look out for the loose hounds?

RE: Didn't know which thread to put this under- very sad.

Hi M,

Thank you for this news. Oh my. That is so sad. This thread is fine. I would love to help out with this story. I would even like to do an auction to help raise money to help out those greyhounds that got hurt. Can you help me find out how we can help them all. It is very sad to know the man died and his grandsons are in the hospital.Plus to learn that some greyhounds died and got hurt. Plus to boot some greyhounds are running loose. I hope that ones running loose are caught before they get hurt.

M, This is a very sad day. My goes out to all of them

Ok, here is an update from the other site. 23 of 30 hounds are safe! YAY!!! Of those 23, 20 of them are in Dubuqe safe, 3 are in need of a vet and QCGA is in charge of that, then after treatment, they will go on to Kenosha, WI, 4 were killed in the road (interstate) and 3 are still loose. There are apparently many people out looking for them and trying to bring them home safe.

Thank goodness so many of them are safe! Apparently, those needing vet care are not serious. Here again, apparently only minor injuries if any. Thank doG for that!

The grandsons are 19 and 17 and are okay. I would imagine minor bumps, bruises and scrapes.

There has been an update!!! Only 3, not 4 were killed, and 4, not 3 were loose. 3 of the 4 have been found and picked up. The 4th one is still on the loose and is very scared. The ones that weren't injured at the initial pickup were taken to a farm in the area to rest and recoup before being taken on to Dairyland. I feel so bad for the baby that is still on the loose, especially with this weather that we are having now, but I am also very relieved that almost all of them have been picked up and temporarially relocated. Hopefully, the one that is still loose will be hungry enough and cold enough (sounds awful, I know) to actually go up to one of the many people out there looking for him/her.

More update!! The last baby on the loose has been caught. She has an injury to her leg, but is being looked at by a vet. The police ended up cornering her in a fenced in area and she was so exhausted, she just let them catch her. YAY!!!!! So glad that all are now safe and sound. Especially with the weather we are having right now. It's 18 degrees at my house, very cold and we are supposed to be getting dumped on tomorrow and Sunday, getting an approximate 6-12" of snow. YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank the lord,

Most of the greys made to a safe place and did not get killed. I feel so bad for the 3 that did, God speed to them. Plus I happy to know the grandsons are ok. That is a blessing.
