Providence RI Dog Park

Did you know that here in RI we had another dog park. Yup it is true. They just closed up because it was too full and not kept clean. What a shame.

The Providence Dog parK Association

************TIME TO CELEBRATE!************

COME ONE, COME ALL!!! JOIN US FOR OUR OPENING CELEBRATION!!!
Where:
Gano St Dog Park (click on "Gano St Dog Park" button on the left of your screen for directions)
When: Monday, July 24th, 2006, rain or shine
Time: 5:30 pm
Who will be there? Mayor Cicciline, Councilman David Segal (Ward 2), Providence Parks Superintendent Alix Ogden, plus other city council members, candidates and Parks Board members. Oh yeah... there will be lots of dogs there too! (and probably a lot of people who love dogs)
WHY DO YOU NEED TO BE THERE ON THE 24TH???

Why join us??? We want to educate city officials about dog parks, and why they are now a necessity for urban living. Dog parks are ALL OVER the U.S.... and most cities have several of them. One dog park per city is NOT GOING TO WORK! Show up and tell our elected officials that we are here to stay!

Hey...IT'S PRETTY SIMPLE. IF WE DON'T DO IT, IT WON'T GET DONE. JOIN US! BE VOCAL! SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!

******

THE CITY OF PROVIDENCE HAS ITS FIRST OFFICIAL OFF-LEASH AREA FOR DOGS!

THE PROVIDENCE PARKS DEPT. HAS ENCLOSED A SPACE AT THE GANO STREET PARK ON PROVIDENCE'S EAST SIDE. THE OFF-LEASH AREA OPENED ON JUNE 14th, 2006

WHERE IS THE NEW PARK? Click on the Gano St Park button on the left of your screen for directions.

Please take note: The temporary off-leash area at Brown St IS NOW CLOSED. The gates have been removed and the park will no longer serve as a dog park. Click on the BROWN ST. DOG PARK button and scroll down the page to read "SOME CLOSING THOUGHTS".

IMPORTANT!!!

The Providence Dog parK Association has kicked off its fundraising campaign! All donations are fully tax deductible thanks to our partnership with Community Canines for Companionship and Care (a 501[c]3). Click on the "How You Can Help" button on the left of your screen. All contributions go to funding and improving the new dog park. Any amount will be helpful and GREATLY appreciated!

So where is this dog park anyway???

The new dog park is located off of Gano St. The main entrance to the park is at the intersection of Power and Gano. There is a yellow blinking light at the intersection and you will see the a sign for Gano Market. Turn in at the market and drive past it. You will see the Fox Point Community Garden area on your right. Turn right and proceed to the end of the parking lot. You will pass the soccer field and see the basketball courts at the southernmost end of the soccer field. The enclosed off leash area is behind (east of) the basketball courts.

There is also a second parking area on Fremont St. Fremont is the tiny street between the south end of Dunkin' Doughnuts' parking lot and the Carniceria Meat Market. When you park in this lot, you avoid walking past the soccer field.

But the dog park doesn't appear to be finished.... does it???

That's because it's NOT!!! Yes, we have an enclosed space for off-leash play. It's a great start (and a rather historical one for Providence!), but we need to make a lot of improvements. Here is a little wish list. These are some of the things that we are raising funds for:

*Additional fencing to enclose and area just for small dogs

*Benches

*Shade... some type of awning

*Better signage

*A top notch dog waste container system, tamper and vandal proof

*A dog waste bag dispenser

*Some type of water feature

*Contract with a weekly pick up service to empty the dog waste container and refill the bag dispenser

*Other stuff? Suggestions? Ideas? Comments?

You are the ones who can help make this a great park! Click on the "How You Can Help" button on the left of your screen to make a donation NOW! This is the only way improvements will be made, so support YOUR park... any amount will help!
