Nitting

Oreo nitted me really hard on the inside of my lower arm.  It really hurt and it even left dents in my arm!!  Is it normal for them to nit this hard?  I thought he had broken the skin at first until after I pulled up my shirt sleeve and looked.

Hi Oreosmom,

I have not heard of greyhounds nitting. I do feel that it is not a good thing that he does that. Maybe it to get your attention. I would try to get him stop it before it comes a habbitt. Good Luck.

Oh, believe me, we do not encourage this!!  He does it when Morgan comes home from school, too.  He gets after her and I am teaching her how to deal with it.  He also will do something like it when I am vacuuming.  He sneaks around behind me and gets me on the back of the thigh.

I hold his nose/snout and make him look at me and say "NO nit"!  I don't swat him or anything, but I make sure that he gets the idea that I'm not happy with him.  After a while, he'll come up to me and try to glue himself to me to make up.  The only times we really have trouble with hime nitting is when we come home and let him out of his kennel and when Morgan comes home and when I am vacuuming.

Sounds like he may just do it when he is excited?? Callie used to do the same thing, but come to think of it, now she just runs in circles and pogos when we come home or she is excited. She is really a chatterer...she does it when she is happy, excited and even when she is nervous. It gets really loud too, like her teeth are chattering because she is freezing or something. I think it is cute. I even think the nitting is cute...except when she does it to me! OUCH! She does it to her brother Kodi when she gets excited....he doesn't seem to mind though??

He seems to be getting better about it and we get after him just as he starts to nit.  He does stop the process and then just runs and bounces around.  He really tries to be a good boy!

Our boy makes contact.  In fact, he almost got "dad" over the weekend.  They were playing (Dad was pushing his face around, making his lips "rattle", pushing his body around, all gently) and Oreo almost got him in "the" area, but ripped his sweat pants instead.  He was harshly corrected (harshly, to me) by dad and that was the end of it.  I suspect that Oreos attitude had something to do with the fact the his spine was out of alignment, but was "fixed" today!  He seems much better.  I know I get grouchy when I'm out of alignment.
